Word Study is a research based approach to spelling instruction where students' developmental spelling level is used to gauge instruction on how words work.
The goal of Word Study is to:
1) help students become active word solvers instead of temporary word memorizers
2) create lifelong spellers vs. weekly test takers
3) encourage transference of word study knowledge into daily writing and reading
Since the 2009-2010 school year, Cox Mill Elementary has been piloting the Word Study approach to spelling instruction. We began with seven teachers in grades first through third. The following year we expanded and included eighteen teachers in grades kindergarten through fourth. Last year we continued to expand to thirty-one teachers in grades kindergarten through fourth grade. This year, all classrooms are participating in Word Study.
