W. O.R .K. S. (Working on Respect, Kindness and Social Skills) is an alternative special education program designed to serve 8 to 10 middle school students with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
Our program offers individualized instruction in a highly structured emotionally supportive environment. Academic areas addressed include Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, Social Skills, and Physical Education.
Other curriculum components include conflict resolution techniques, problem-solving strategies, and self-monitoring/self-control skills. All students participate in a behavior management program (point and level system), grounded in reinforcement contingencies which can result in loss of privileges for inappropriate behavior or in students receiving extra rewards for pro-social behavior.
As a public separate school setting, W. O. R. K. S. is intended to be a temporary placement to help students gain in maintaining self-control so that they may successfully return to their regular public school program. The amount of time needed to complete the our program is determined by student attitude and by the student's ability to demonstrate behaviors that are predictive of success in a less restrictive setting.
