Welcome to the Odell family! One last time... Dear everyone- I send the biggest thank you's to everyone who helped make my last week at Odell so extra special. My years at Odell have been filled with wonderful students and parents who have shown such great support for their children and our school. I thank our wonderful staff and my kindergarten team for such special memories. I have no regrets in my 36 years of teaching and loved all of my students over the years. I plan to keep in touch and keep track of all of my children the best I can. Again, thanks for the wonderful memories. I have been blessed by all of you! Have a great summer! Love, Mrs. Lackey **************************************************************** A special note to my students and parents: Thanks to all of our families for the wonderful class BBQ on Friday night at the Hall's home! A special thanks goes to Fiona Hall for hosting all of us in her beautiful home. Thanks for all the delicious food and great fellowship. I feel so blessed to be retiring with such a supportive and caring group of students and parents. After many years teaching in Cabarrus County, I am grateful to retire with such a delightful group of students. Ms. Coy and I love your children and will never forget any of you! Please continue to contact me through email/Facebook or write me at PO Box 481, Davidson, NC 28036. **************************************************************** Our class End-of-the-Year Luau will take place on Wednesday, June 5th at 12:00. We will have a "tropical"covered dish luncheon followed by a program by the children. Parents and extended family are invited. Please make sure your food is there by 12:00. Dress Hawaiian! **************************************************************** Please check your parent handbook for a class list of student names. For safety/security reasons, I will not post first and last names online. Thanks! Mrs. Lackey. ******************************************************
Common curriculum terms you will begin to hear about in kindergarten: New "Common Core" goals in Language Arts and Math are being implemented at each grade level throughout our state (in 42 states total). These goals are target learning goals that all teachers will use for planning curriculum in Language Arts and Math. Each teacher will inform parents of grade level goals that your child will be work towards this year. "Direct Instruction" or "DI"- Students are grouped by reading ability levels and are taught basic phonics instruction by kindergarten teachers and assistants. This year, DI will be taught in individual classrooms as a reading intervention to practice reading sounds. "Workshops" in Reading, Math and Writing- A workshop model of teaching allows students to work in small groups with the teacher and in independent work groups to practice math, reading, and writing activities. For example, after the teacher teaches skills in whole group, students may rotate through stations to complete a variety of leveled learning tasks.
**************************************************************** IMPORTANT PROCEDURES: Each day a green "Dragon Folder" will be sent home in your child's book bag. Please check this folder for school information, PTA flyers, and papers to sign and return to school. On the "Keep at Home" side, please keep your child's papers at home. Please keep in mind that in kindergarten much of the work, especially in the beginning, is hands-on and not on paper. I will also be keeping some of your child's work at school in a "portfolio" to show progress throughout the year. Each Monday in your child's Dragon folder, you will find a hard copy of my weekly newsletter, "Lackey's Letter." This will include important weekly information, plus the snack schedule and recess/Encore schedule. These newsletters are always attached at the bottom of this webpage each week that you may print if you lose one. ****************************************************************** Please label your child's supplies and belongings, especially labels inside all clothes. Also, please send an extra set of clothes inside of a Ziploc bag for your child in case an "accident" happens. Show and Tell is an important way for students to learn to practice speaking and listening skills, demonstate use of new vocabulary and share a part of themselves with their peers. Many students who are very shy to speak orally at the beginning of the year learn to speak confidently in front of the class by the end of the year.
