Sisters torn together
By Jonathan E. Coleman
jcoleman@independenttribune.com
It sounds like the setup for some kind of brainteaser.
A man shoots a picture of his daughter during her volleyball match, then points his camera to the opposing team's side of the court and shoots another picture - of his daughter.
Such was the scene Monday for Jeff Yeargin, who, along with his wife Jan watched their two daughters face off against one another when the Central Cabarrus High School volleyball team hosted Hickory Ridge High School.
The Yeargin's daughter Megan, 14, is a freshman at Hickory Ridge. Since the school won't have a senior class during its first year, her older sister, Lauren, 17, remained at Central Cabarrus for her final year of high school.
"I think she got into volleyball because I played," Lauren said. "If I hadn't played, I don't think she would have had the access."
In addition to picking up a few practical pointers from her sister along the way, Megan said she learned a lot from Lauren and the game.
"She helped me to always have a good attitude," Megan said.
But the latest twist in the sisterly rivalry added a unique challenge.
"We're a torn family," Jan said before the game that pitted her daughters against one another. "I was more nervous than anyone, I think. I was yelling, 'Go Vikes' and then 'Go Bulls.' It's very strange because we've spent almost 10 years here saying 'Go Vikes.'"
Adding to the storyline, Jeff used to teach at Central, and has now moved to Hickory Ridge. After spending the weekend setting up his new classroom, he returned to Central Cabarrus before the game to visit with some of his former co-workers.
Megan admitted to being a little disappointed about not getting to play alongside her sister, but she's also excited about the opportunity being on a school's first-ever volleyball team holds.
"I hoped the school wouldn't open up so I could play with her, but it didn't," the younger Yeargin said. "I'm excited to be in a new school and set new records."
As tends to between sibling rivalries, when the contest started, sparks flew - literally. An errant pass soared into the rafters, striking a light and sending a small shower of sparks falling to the court.
Lauren quickly grabbed a broom to sweep up the mess, as the Vikings swept the Bulls in three games.
During the match, Lauren whizzed a few serves at her younger sister.
"It wasn't like I was aiming at her," Lauren joked after the game. "Well, towards the end I was."
In the end, Lauren said she was impressed with her younger sister's performance.
And Megan, who admits to being the more competitive of the two, said she wished her team had won.
"I wish we would have won, but we didn't," she said. "They have a lot of seniors. We have six freshmen. (If we were to play again), I would want it more."
And with the sister-versus-sister season opener behind them, Jan and Jeff can now turn their attention to who will travel where to see which daughter as each continue their separate seasons at separate schools.
"We've talked about it," Jan said. "And we know we're going to have games on the same day. We're just going to have to do as much as we can and try and see as many games as we can."
