Odell Wins Battle of the Books

2012 Elementary Battle of the Books (BOB) ChampionsCongratulations to W.R. Odell Elementary School - 2012 Elementary Battle of the Books (BOB) Champions!

On April 27, 2012, the team competed in the county-level competition that included fourth and fifth grade students from 17 elementary schools.

Students on Odell team began reading the 18 books on the 2012 list during their summer break last year.  During the school year, they met once a week during their lunch time with their Coach Darlene Easley.  Easley worked as the media specialist at Odell for the past 17 years. She retired in January but continued to coach the BOB team as a volunteer each Wednesday at lunch from January through April.

During weekly practices, the 11 students would divide into two teams and answer questions similar to the ones they might be asked at the county competition.  In addition, students took home sets of questions weekly to study on their own.

In mid-April each student chose one or more of the 18 books to re-read and serve as the "team expert" for that book.  Their diligent work paid off at the competition when the Odell team soundly defeated each team they played.

Questions are always in the format of "In which book did…"  Some of the questions refer to obscure details in the books, but the undaunted Odell Dragons answered correctly and confidently nearly every time.  They earned themselves a trophy that has been placed in the school media center as a reminder of their hard work and great success.

Students on the team: Melia Eaton, Victoria Garcia, Anna Coley, Madison Michael, Zack Tubbs, Srishti Rajagopal, Sarah Trantham, Aashna Shah, Ashley Jackson, Chase Carey, and Nicole Vargas.
