Student Group Serves School and Community

The Bobcats on a Mission student group at R. Brown McAllister Elementary School stays busy helping the community. Recently, Nancy Litton, community executive for the American Red Cross Cabarrus County chapter, visited the students to thank them for their assistance with a community fire prevention and safety project during the holiday season.
The group, comprised of 5th grade students, participates in social responsibility and service learning projects that benefit the school and contributes positively to local and international needs and gives the 5th graders an exciting opportunity to take on student leadership roles at the school, exemplify good character traits such as compassion and empathy and work to make a positive difference in the school and in the local community.
Group facilitators Sandy Bravo-Boyd, teacher, and Cherri Johnson, school guidance counselor, along with volunteers Julie Whitley, intervention specialist, and Lori Maguire, parent volunteer, work with the students to identify opportunities where they can make a difference.
In the fall, 5th graders choose to participate in the group and must adhere to the academic and behavioral requirements to attend the biweekly meetings. Students must maintain their class averages, display positive behavior and exhibit good character.
During the 2008-2009 school year, twenty-one students participated in the group. This year, the group has grown to 27 members. Past projects have included a food drive, collecting pet food for animals in local shelters, and hosting residents of a local assisted living center for a game day at the school.
Earlier this month, the students discussed the virtues of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and drafted a series of morning announcements that dealt with good character, being a positive influence in the community, being steadfast in the face of peer pressure and having a good conscience.
