Math Fair Win for JN Fries Student
Congratulations to Shane Benson, student at J.N. Fries Magnet School. Shane recently competed and won an Honorable Mention certificate in the North Carolina State Math Fair.
The N.C. State Math Fair was held at the North Carolina School for Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) in Durham earlier this month. Students from all over the state competed in four divisions: K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and High School.
Shane competed in the 6-8 grade division representing the STEM program at J. N. Fries Magnet School. Shane's project was titled
"Sloping Thrills,"
which analyzed blueprint dimensions from The Intimidator ride at Carowinds and compared the slope of the incline to the slope of the decline. The project display depicted a model of the ride, a customized interactive computer model based on the ride, as well as a colorful board required of all participants.
Shane earned the right to compete at the state level by receiving 3rd place at the Central Region Math Competition held in March on March 31st. Shane was chosen to represent J.N. Fries at the regional level from more than 200 students at the school competition held during the
"Celebration of pi"
on March 14th.
The state event was a grand culmination to all of Shane's hard work throughout the spring. Each student was called to present to the judges in the morning, while parents and community members anxiously awaited their return. Students from NCSSM graciously took visitors on tours and assisted with the event. The state math fair is hosted through the North Carolina Council for Teachers of Mathematics and their sponsors and partners.
