JNF Magnet Celebrates With Panthers
J.N. Fries Magnet School celebrated its first place finish in the 2011 Play 60 Challenge with a pep rally with the Carolina Panthers on Friday, Feb. 17th.
NFL Play 60 is the National Football League's campaign aimed at encouraging kids to be active for 60 minutes each day in order to reverse childhood obesity. The Play 60 Challenge encourages students to keep daily logs of their physical activity for four weeks. In partnership with the American Heart Association, the Carolina Panthers sponsor this fitness competition.
Seven middle schools in the Charlotte region participated in the Challenge. J.N. Fries finished first by compiling an amazing 2,342,765 total minutes - an average of 2,554 minutes per student!
As a reward for winning the challenge the school was awarded a $1,000 health and wellness grant and a pep rally featuring Sir Purr, the Top Cats and former Carolina Panther All-Pro Defensive End Mike Rucker.
Here's a look at the 2011 competition by the numbers:
- 6,187,147 is the total number of activity minutes logged by the seven participating middle schools
- 3,758 is the total number of students that participated
- 1,646 is the average number of minutes logged by each student
