Dear Parent:

North Carolina’s school accountability program, the ABCs of Public Education, provides important information about our schools.  But, these numbers only tell part of the story.  We know that other indicators of school quality are important to you and to our community. For your convenience, all of this information can be found in one place, on the North Carolina School Report Card.

Governor Beverly Perdue is committed to providing parents with more information about schools.  She believes that well-informed parents will be empowered and more involved with their children’s learning and their schools.  In addition, the federal No Child Left Behind Act requires schools to issue report cards.

This report card includes important information about school and student performance, class sizes, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, and teacher quality.  There is also information about how our school measured against federal Adequate Yearly progress targets and the number of suspensions and expulsions in our school.  Report card data are available for our school, our school district, and for the state’s education system as a whole.

The numbers only tell part of the story.  At our school, we are proud of the following amenities:  all classrooms are equipped with interactive Smart Boards; we have added wireless connections to our 3-5 classrooms along with additional laptop computers and iPads to increase student access to technology.  Also, our teachers will receive staff development this year in the new Common Core Standards in order to keep their core subject knowledge current.

The report cards are available on the NC Report Cards Web site at www.ncreportcards.org.  Look at our school’s full report card at this Web site, or read the shorter summary, called the Report Card Snapshot, that we have enclosed with this letter.  The information in our school report card is from the 2010-2011 school year.

At W. M. Irvin Elementary School, we want parents to be more informed about our school’s progress and more involved in our school on a regular basis.  Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss this report card or any other interests you have in our school.  Thank you for allowing me to share this report card with you and thank you for supporting our efforts to provide your child with a high-quality education.

Sincerely,

Lauren Finley
