No. Everything she did was driven by Mrs. Reed or guilt. She was one of the many abusers in Jane's life.
I don't know. If she really felt guilty about how she treated Jane, why would she name her own child that and be reminded every day of the girl she mistreated? I don't think she was the type to self-inflict pain as a punishment. Rather, I think their relationship involved Bessie loving but pitying Jane, and by naming her daughter so, she possibly wanted to redeem herself and take back the things she did to Jane by being a good mother. Am I completely off base?
How do you justify her daughter's name? Guilt?
Not so much "guilt" as "retribution". She allowed herself to be pressured and swayed by Reed and Abbot and felt no repercusions for her meanness. Jane's needing and loving her REGARDLESS probably struck her after becoming a mother the first time.
